# The Fourth Test: When Everything Can Be Synthesized, Who Prices Reality?

On October 30, 1858, in Bradford, England.

At a street vendor's stall, peppermint candy was selling faster than usual — because it was cheap. The cheapness had a reason: sugar was too expensive in that era, and the common practice in candy workshops was to bulk out the mix with a plaster powder called "daff." Everyone did it, and no one came to harm. This time, a pharmacist's apprentice mismeasured the ingredients, and what went into the mix was not plaster, but arsenic.

By some accounts, about twenty people died and over two hundred were poisoned, most of them children.

What is most worth pondering about this tragedy is not the apprentice's carelessness, but the everyday reality before the incident: **adulteration was not a crime — it was standard practice.** Alum was in the flour, iron filings were in the beer, tea leaves were dyed with coloring — mid-nineteenth-century British consumers knew this perfectly well; they simply had no way to tell. The chemical industry had, for the first time, made "faking it" cheaper than "making it real," and the ordinary person's tongue and eyes were the detection instruments of the previous era.

Sound familiar? Swap "food" for "content," and "the chemical industry" for "generative models" — that is the internet, right now.

## I. Our Three Questions Were Missing a Fourth

I previously wrote about three exam questions posed by technological revolution: the recombination question, the scarcity question, the translation question. A reader asked: now that AI has driven the production cost of content down toward zero, is there a new question?

There is. And history has already tested it before — every time a technology makes "fabrication" cheaper than "reality," the same question gets handed out again: **when everything can be synthesized, how is accountable trust to be priced?**

This question has already made an appearance in the scarcity question: wherever abundance appears, value migrates to its complement. As content moves toward infinite abundance, value migrates toward "what cannot be synthesized." But it deserves its own answer, because that answer is not a business judgment — it is the origin story of an entire industry. And that history was written in corpses.

## II. Trust Was Never a Virtue — It Is Collateral

Back to Bradford. In the thirty years after the tragedy, two things happened in Britain and the United States that together laid the foundation of modern commercial trust.

The first: legislation and testing. In 1860, Britain passed its first Adulteration of Food Act, and over the following decades gradually built up a system of public analysts — society began paying people specifically to answer the question, "is this the real thing?"

The second is more interesting: the rise of the brand. It was precisely in the era when adulteration was most rampant that "the brand" became worth real money for the first time. Manufacturers registered their trademarks, printed their promises on the packaging, and — by some accounts — certain food merchants deliberately switched to clear glass bottles, letting you see with your own eyes that nothing had been mixed in. The essence of a brand revealed itself in that moment: **it is not fame — it is reputation pledged in advance. I have staked a name built up over years right here; if adulteration is caught, everything I have is what gets paid out.**

The brand premium consumers paid extra for was not buying a better taste — it was buying an address where, if something went wrong, someone could be held to account.

The age of electricity replayed this exact script. As I wrote in *The People Swept Away by Electricity*: early electrical fires were frequent, insurance companies could not keep up with the payouts, and in 1894 the engineer they dispatched, William Merrill, founded UL (Underwriters Laboratories); the first edition of the National Electrical Code followed soon after. **Safety was never an attribute that a new technology comes with built in — it is a public good bought with accidents and lives.** Large-scale accidents came first, the certification industry came after; the order has never once reversed.

So the mechanism behind this exam question can be written as a single sentence: **every time the cost of faking something drops by an order of magnitude, the price of "being held accountable" rises by an order of magnitude — the scale of the verification industry equals the scale of the synthesis technology.**

## III. Trust Dies Where It Cannot Be Seen

There is an even colder case, one that shows exactly how trust dies.

During the Cold War, American submarines infiltrated Soviet coastal waters and attached wiretapping pods to the USSR's undersea communication cables, running undetected for a decade. The most astonishing discovery of this operation was not the technology — it was what was on the tapes: **a large share of Soviet military communications were transmitted in the clear, unencrypted.** The Soviet military was convinced that cables in their own coastal waters were absolutely safe — after all, who could possibly reach a line at the bottom of the sea?

Trust in a channel has nothing to do with how secure it actually is — it depends only on how invisible it is.

That sentence should be posted on the wall of every company doing business with AI today. You trust the face on your video call because you have never seen a fake one; you trust your boss's voice on the phone because voice forgery used to be too expensive for anyone to bother with. In 2024, according to police reports, a Hong Kong employee at a multinational company transferred roughly HK$200 million after a video conference call — the CFO and colleagues on that call were all deepfakes. He was not foolish; he was simply living in the immunity gap: **the spread of a medium always outpaces immunity to that medium.** The Europeans who, in the 1930s, first heard a leader's voice come out of a radio had no antibodies; neither do we, the first generation to see a fake colleague on a video call.

Fraud is only the vanguard. The real main force is diffuse: once any recording, video, or piece of text could plausibly be synthetic, default trust drops to zero — this is not a matter of one person getting deceived, it is the entire society's transaction costs being repriced. The nineteenth-century housewife looked at her flour and did not know whether there was plaster in it; we, in the twenty-first century, look at our screens and do not know whether there is a person on the other end.

## IV. The Answer: Turn "Someone Is Accountable" Into a Product

The question is clear — where does the answer get written? History points in only one direction: what became valuable after Bradford was the brand, the testing, and the regulation; what became valuable after the electrical fires was UL. **When content is free, verification commands a price.**

There are currently three visible forms of scarcity, which I counted in *Monarchs of the Radio*: **liveness** (real-time responsiveness cannot be pre-recorded — which is why in-person speeches, live call-in streams, and long-form podcasts have suddenly been rediscovered and loved), **long-term consistency** (a ten-year record of words and conduct cannot be manufactured overnight — history has become a luxury good), and **accountable identity** (a person who pays a price for saying the wrong thing is more credible than a synthetic entity that is always right).

Four criteria for operators:

1. **Audit your medium of trust.** What medium is the trust between you and your customers, employees, and investors actually built on — voice, face, documents, a seal? The day that medium is breached by synthesis technology, your trust assets devalue along with it. Before it is breached, move your trust onto a substrate that cannot be synthesized.
2. **Check for "collateral" in your product.** Of every extra cent a customer pays you, is there a line item for "if something goes wrong, someone can be held to account"? If not, what you are selling is becoming free. Conversely, auditing, certification, guarantees, insurance — businesses that turn "someone is accountable" itself into a product are, right now, standing in the exact position UL occupied in 1894. This era's UL does not have a name yet — before 1894, UL did not have a name either.
3. **Do not outsource trust.** Traffic can be rented, compute can be rented — trust is one of the few assets that, the moment you outsource it, you have simply given away. A platform's certification is the platform's collateral, not yours.
4. **Build immunity before infection.** The first time your company receives a deepfaked "boss's voice ordering a wire transfer," will your process stop it? Callback verification, dual sign-off, code-word protocols — immunity has to be built before the infection arrives. Do not be 1930s Europe. Do not be that employee in Hong Kong.

## V. Closing the Exam

After the Bradford tragedy, the British did not invent a tongue that could detect arsenic. What they invented were laboratories, regulations, and brands — **society did not learn to recognize lies; society learned to make lying expensive.**

This round will be no different. Expecting everyone to train themselves to spot AI synthesis on sight is like expecting a Victorian housewife to teach herself chemistry. What will actually happen is that accountable trust gets repriced, re-collateralized, and turned into a product all over again — and the pricing power belongs to whoever stakes their own name on it first.

The first three questions asked how you win with new technology. The fourth question asks something else entirely:

When everyone can produce something indistinguishable from the real thing, what do you have to prove that what you say is true —

and how much are you willing to pay if you are wrong.
